Q: In the movie ‘Widow on the Hill’ why didn’t the jury find Linda guilty of Hank Cavanaugh’s death?

A: Because they had no proof that she did it intentionally; she was a nurse and the morphine that was found in the pantry could have been left over from when she was taking care of the dying wife. The fact that both the husband and daughter were recovering alcoholics didn’t help either. Who was to say they were telling the truth. It’s firmly believed by many that she should have gone to prison.

The movie was based on a true story. But the question is asked using the names of the fictitious characters in the movie. I don’t know the reasons they used in the movie to get her off the charges.

In real life, Donna J. Somerville was found innocent in the death of Hamilton A. Somerville Jr. due to holes in the circumstantial evidence of the case. Evidence showed at least three drugs in his system at his death. She insisted on his immediate cremation and tried to avoid an autopsy. It was also known that she had numerous affairs during the marriage.
